A Different Light

Open Call 2023

Launching in January 2023, we are seeking projects from Malaysian and international artists that are unique and personal in their content and approach. Selected photography and video projects will be exhibited at various partner locations in Kuala Lumpur in September 2023 as part of the 2nd EXPOSURE+ PHOTO festival.

The 2023 theme A Different Light invites photographers to submit recently completed projects or work-in-progress that have been inspired or recounted by past stories, memories, and lived experiences. We want to see the stories you have always longed to tell or re-tell in a different way, approach, format, or narrative - those fantastic tales from childhood or encounters with strangers, the nostalgic family outings, those first infatuations, and emotions.

Photography + Imagination is a powerful tool for telling visual stories; limitless and unbounded by conventions and rules or restrictions.  Your stories may be fact, fiction or somewhere in between. Your projects will be evaluated and selected by a panel of experienced professionals, produced and exhibited in one of our venue partners in the city of Kuala Lumpur.

We hope the buzzwords "remake, recreate, reinterpret, and reinvent" will inspire your project submissions to our forthcoming Open Call. This open call will be extended to international artists for the first time! We invite photographers globally to submit your projects and for an opportunity to have your images exhibited in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to an appreciative and youthful South East Asian audience.

Projects and video stories may come from all genres - documentary, conceptual, experimental, or fine-art disciplines that have a unique place within the world we live in today.

Submission of projects opens in January 2023.
