Photography For All

Following the successful staging of the KL20X20 photography event to commemorate Kuala Lumpur in the year 2020, the co-founders Nadirah Zakariya and Steven Lee, with team members Munirah Rohaizan and Stacy Liu are proud to present Exposure+ Photo to the city once again, despite a 6-month delay due to the pandemic restrictions.

Exposure+ Photo displays revolve around the theme of 'Belong' and feature the projects of 11 Malaysian photographic artists selected from an open call in early 2021, plus a parallel curated exhibition of 5 international photographers.

Exhibitions will be displayed at various partner venues around Kuala Lumpur city centre, accompanied by presentations, workshops, and related photography activities open to the general public.

In our image-saturated world, we often only skim the surface of digital content that breezes through our personal screens daily by the hundreds or thousands. We believe that fine, cerebral photography, especially in Malaysia, must be given more visibility in an industry that is often seen to be participatory and aesthetics-driven.  We hope to identify and promote more local artists that use project-based photography to effectively communicate stories that are thought-provoking, socially conscious, and personal to a worldwide audience. The effective use of photography opens our hearts and minds by creating a deeper awareness of the human condition and mankind's relationship with its surroundings.

The 11 photographers presented have been selected through an open call in January 2021. The selection process was overseen by the co-founders' Steven Lee and Nadirah Zakariya, who have chosen projects that explore personal space, the environment, identity, creative vision, portraiture amongst other narratives - with a central theme interpretation of BELONG. Following the success of KL20X20, a similar format is adopted in the procuring of photography for Exposure+ Photo.
