This Introduction to Photography workshop is suitable for individuals new to photography and cameras.

Learn more about the technical side of photography, and build an understanding of how the camera works, how to handle it, controlling depth of field, and the basic theory of composition. This classroom based workshop will be held over two consecutive days (3 hours each day), and aims to provide students with enough knowledge for them to pursue film photography with confidence.

What this workshop covers: 

Day one

The Camera Obscura A brief history of photography and how light works.

Types of cameras Learn more about the different types of film cameras available and how they work.

Taking photographs — aperture, shutter speed & ISO How do aperture, shutter speed and ISO work together to capture an image? We will explain how each variable works and how to control each of them with confidence. We will also touch on lighting contrast and how it affects the look of a photograph.

Q&A

Day two

Film types and sizes We will look at the different film and sizes available.

Camera lenses What camera lenses are there and how do you choose which to use?

Depth of field An often ignored part of photography but one of the most important. What is it, what variables control it, and how do you master depth of field?

Basic composition What is a 'good' photograph? This is very subjective, but a few basic rules can help to elevate your photos.
